Sperm Donor Screening Process

After approval of your application and acceptance of your semen analysis and freezing results, the remaining steps in the process to become a fully qualified sperm donor will take approximately 2 to 3 months. During this period, we will continue to analyze your specimens and you will interview with several staff members.

You will have various laboratory tests, including STD (sexually transmitted disease) screening, infectious disease screening. and genetic testing. In order to assist us in the evaluation of your personal and family medical history, you will complete a document called a "long profile." This document asks specific and detailed questions regarding your health and well being and that of your family members.

What Are The Steps?
Step #1 - Potential Sperm Donor Contact
The anonymous donor screening process consists of medical and genetic testing. If you want to find out if you would qualify for our screening program, please fill out the sperm donor application.

Step #2 - Potential Sperm Donor Process
Once you have met the initial requirements for the program, based on the answers to the questions in Step 1, an appointment will be made for you to visit the lab.

At this appointment, you will be asked to complete a donor application and to collect your first semen specimen in a private collection room.

Compensation is not provided for this specimen as it is only used for analysis. We will contact you, normally within 3 days, with the results of the laboratory analysis and the review of your application.

Step #3 - Conditionally Qualified Sperm Donor Process
Once your application is accepted from Step 2, you will be asked to make your next appointment. This is one of four or more appointments during the qualification process.

First, you will be assigned a donor number and you will receive an orientation to the sperm donor program. You will also be given instructions regarding how to complete your donor profile, the document that provides information on you and your family members and is used to assess your family medical history.

After you complete the donor profile, you will meet with our genetic counselor to review and discuss the information. During this process you may provide semen donations and you will be compensated for all acceptable donations.

During the qualification process, you will have a general physical examination performed by our physician.

All laboratory testing, including the genetic screening and physical examination, are free of charge to you. Any identifying information collected is strictly confidential and is never released without your written consent.

For more information regarding sperm donor confidentiality refer to our policy on donor anonymity. Upon completion of these activities and with the approval of our medical director, you will become a member of a very special group...a fully qualified sperm donor for California Cryobank!

Step #4 - Qualified Sperm Donor Process
Congratulations! You may now customize your own donation schedule. We request that you donate 2-3 times a week.

Your blood will be drawn approximately every three months to provide for required infectious disease testing.

You will also be asked to complete an audio interview to provide additional information regarding your profile as well as a questionnaire to evaulate your personality.

You will also have the option to provide us with a baby photo of yourself for clients to see.

Step #5 - Retired Sperm Donor Process
When you decide to retire from the donor program, we require that you return 6 months following your last donation for one last required infectious disease testing. Special compensation is provided for this last visit.
