In addition to our Anonymous Donor program, California Cryobank (CCB) has recently launched an Open donor program. Our open donors undergo the same health and genetic screening as our anonymous sperm donors, and receive the same level of identity protection.
What the Open Donor Program Is
The primary difference between Open and Anonymous Donors is that our Open donors are committed to one contact with any offspring resulting from their time as a donor. This contact takes place when any offspring conceived using the donor's sperm reaches the age of 18 or older. At this time the child may contact CCB and request contact with their donor. In turn, CCB informs the donor of the request and assists him in arranging his contact with the child. The contact may be in the form of an email, standard letter, phone call or meeting in person - the type of contact is decided solely by the donor. Because of the extra time and commitment involved, Open Donors are compensated upon qualifying for the program, and $500 when they complete their final blood draw. Like anonymous sperm donors, they receive $100 per every usable specimen.
Confidentiality
Our Open Donors are identified on the CCB donor catalog by a 5-digit number - just like our Anonymous Donors. Open donors are under no financial or legal obligation to support any children conceived using their sperm. CCB does not disclose the donor's name, or any other identifying information to our clients or their children. The amount of personal information that the sperm donor chooses to disclose about himself at the time of contact with the child is at his discretion.
Why This Program Was Created
Some of our sperm donors have already expressed an interest in meeting children conceived from their sperm. Several children born from CCB donor sperm have also contacted us with questions about their donors. We feel that this program helps bridge the gap between a child's right to know about their heritage and the donor's right to confidentiality. Additionally, this sort of "open" or "identity-release" donor program is rapidly being adopted by more and more Sperm Banks within the United States, and has even become the law in other countries. |
